UPCOMING CHURCH EVENTS AS OF AUGUST 17, 2008
SUNDAY, AUGUST 17: BLESSING OF THE SCHOOL BACKPACKS It’s that time of year again! Students of all ages, from preschool to graduate students, are invited to bring in your backpacks, book bags, or whatever else you use to haul around your school supplies, to have them blessed in a special back-to-school ceremony that will be held at both worship services.
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 20: UMW SCHOOL BAGS PROJECT An annual project of the United Methodist Women. Come join us at 1:00 pm in room 11 to make school bags for the students and teachers in Haiti and Liberia. If you don’t sew, we still can use your help to cut and press. Bring your sewing machine and/or iron. We also need donations of sturdy fabric such as canvas, denim, or upholstery. School supplies are also needed to fill the bags. Lists of needed items and a collection box are in Garton Hall. SUNDAY, AUGUST 24: YOUTH HANDBELL CHOIR RESUMES Youth Handbells are back! Starting August 24, we will meet each week prior to Youth Fellowship from 5:30-6:00 pm, and play regularly for the worship services. All youth, grades 6 to 12, are welcome! Contact Elaine Sonnenberg at esonnenb@indiana.edu or 419-980-0035 for more details. THURSDAY, AUGUST 28: ADULT HANDBELL CHOIR RESUMES The Adult Handbell Choir will resume regular weekly rehearsals on August 28 from 8:15-9:15 pm, and will play monthly for the worship services. New members are always welcome! Contact Elaine Sonnenberg for more details. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 7: SCCAP CIRCLES INITIATIVE FOCUS The Church and Society Committee and the United Methodist Women have invited Bonnie Vesely, from the South Central Community Action Program (SCCAP), to bring us up-to-date on “The Circles Initiative”, a high-impact, community-owned strategy to aid low-income families in breaking the cycle of generational poverty and achieve self-sufficiency. Bonnie will be speaking in room 8 at 9:30 am. Please join us in learning more about this program. |
CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS AS OF AUGUST 17, 2006 SPIRITUAL FORMATION COMMITTEE NEWS The committee is setting up a system of continued contact with members who are away at college/university or the military. Families of such persons are asked to report their names and addresses to the church office at 332-5788. Personal letters, copies of “Alive Now” (the young adult edition of “The Upper Room”), and holiday events are projected. Beth Myers and Edie Holmes have volunteered to coordinate this project. LIBRARY NEWS The UMC Library Catalog has recently been updated. All the books in St. Mark's Library are listed by Author, Title, and Subject. This will make it easier for you to know if our library has a book you are looking for and where that book is shelved. You will find the Library Catalog on the bookcase next to the checkout box. THE LIBRARY NEEDS YOUR HELP! There are forty-three books from our library that have been checked out for over two months, some for as many as three years! So please look through your books and if you have any St. Mark’s books, return them so that others may enjoy them. Parents, please remind your children to share by returning books when due. Thirty-three children’s books have been out for more than six months! DONATIONS NEEDED! SHOEBOX PROJECT FOR HOMELESS CHILDREN We currently need hotel-sized small shampoos, small toothpaste, and small toys that will fix into a shoebox. Donations may be placed in the collection box in Garton Hall. Boxes are given to local shelters in Bloomington.
UNITED METHODIST WOMEN KISSEY PROJECT Powdered milk is still being collected for the Kissey Clinic in Sierra Leone. Please place your donations in the labeled box in Garton Hall. |
